HMAUS’ 30th Anniversary

Way back in December we celebrated HMAUS’ 30th Anniversary. It was very enjoyable and ING Direct Café graciously gave us the entire second floor for the evening. We began by taking a tally of all the Apple computers and mobile devices those present either owned or used on a daily basis.

Norm and Dot Hallett and Janet Miller log their Apples.

Here’s my URL – iWeb! MacLearn 2/13/10

You’ve seen it there on the dock, maybe even opened it up and thought “maybe later”.  Well, here’s your chance to learn how to “master” iWeb, one of the free iLife  applications on your Apple,  in a single day.  Ross Rasmussen, in his usual low-key style, will present an introduction on February 13, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at ING Direct Cafe. In this class he will guide you through the program, showing you how to choose a template, use add and format text, drop in images and movies, add links and more pages, then publish it to as your first web page. View the Apple iWeb video tutorial for an overview of this free Mac program. http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iweb No registration needed for this session.

Everyone welcome to this free morning session.

Here’s my URL – iWeb! Hands-on Session:

Ross Rasmussen

Then grab some lunch at the Cafe and at noon the same day Ross will take those who are brave to the next step; creating the each part of your website and publishing it to the Internet. He will lead you through making navigation menus, customizing your pages, publishing to your MobileMe account, and what to do if you don’t have a MobileMe account. Of course, as with all of Ross’s classes, the students will help direct the direction the class takes. He promises to help keep everyone on track so that everyone can Read More…

MacLearn Mobilized Me!

Today Marie Albu, a graphics arts student and daughter of Ron Albu of our HMAUS Board gave an interesting talk on the many things you can do with MobileMe. She demonstrated how to install and activate MobileMe and use it to synch your iCal calendars and addressbooks on your iPhone and computers, both Mac and Windows. She created and uploaded photo galleries either from iPhoto or directly in MobileMe on the road. On the three displays in the front of the room were the iPhone via digital camera on one, Marie’s Keynote show on her Mac on another, and Ron’s Windows machine on the third! Gears crank, wheels turn.  Perhaps in a future MacLearn we’ll have a live video chat with Marie, from San Francisco!  Mahalo to Marie and Ron for a fun presentation. Do use the excellent Apple MobileMe tutorials at http://www.apple.com/mobileme/tutorials/

The next scheduled MacLearn offering is “Here’s my URL -  iWeb” by Ross Rasmussen on February 13. Put up a website quickly with MobileMe, GoDaddy or your favorite webhost.  More information to come!

Picture the fun you could be having!

eggnogNovember 21st was a sampler day for MacLearn.  Norman and Dorothy Hallett, Robbie Gee, Joan Larcom, Marcy Katz, Richard Sato,  Lorie Goodman and Terrence Young had fun with all kinds of great apps for making things with images.

Terrence first shot a clip of each person in front of ING Direct’s green wall using the video feature of his regular Canon camera.  The clips were brought into iMovie using the green screen effect and voila! folks were transported to Branson, the grandchildren’s house, Chicago or Europe.

Next was Photo Booth.  Lorie took a video ride on a moving roller coaster and others tried the 4-up, sepia tone and miscellaneous effects.  The computer’s built-in camera captured a still or a video clip which could be sent to iPhoto with one click.

HMAUS 30th Anniversary coming soon!

apple2What’s older than the Mac?  The Hawaii Macintosh and Apple Users’ Society.  It began in 1979, just two years after the introduction of the first Apple II.  The Apple II sold for $1,268.  It boasted 4 kb of memory and ran at 1 MHz.  Folks loved it and the Honolulu Apple Users’ Society (HAUS), Junior Apple Users’ Society (JHAUS) and later, the Hawaii Macintosh User Group (HMUG) were formed.  The groups later merged as HMAUS.

Faithful Apple computer users have enjoyed the evolution of this amazing line as it kept its price range but increased its speed and memory exponentially.  Speed in consumer Macs has increased 3.2 millionfold, and memory has increased 4 billionfold. That evolution has kept HMAUS members busy learning and savoring life on the Apple side of the world.

On December 5, 2009 we celebrate HMAUS’ 30th Anniversary, the Macintosh’s 25th anniversary and coincidentally, the Internet’s 40th anniversary.   Join us for a buffet dinner, a some great HMAUS and Apple stories and lots of fun.

Location: ING Direct Cafe at 1958 Kalakaua Avenue. Parking is available.

$15 for HMAUS members, $25 for non-members.  Register at http://www.hmaus.org/anniversary_reservations Deadline Nov. 30th.

E komo mai, join us!

Package that Picture – free workshop

Join our November MacLearn session to learn how to make cards and calendars with iPhoto; edit a picture with Picnik, a free online photo editing service; create a Christmas newsletter with Pages and record a little movie against a green screen — then add it to a new background.  Fun photo stuff!

You can just come to listen or if you want to actually do stuff:

  • Don’t wear green, it will turn into a puka in a green screen image.
  • Bring images of a landscape or anything that would make a good background and other personal photos on a CD or thumbdrive, things that would be great on a card or calendar.
  • If you have a laptop with iPhoto ‘09, bring it.  Have some text to paste into a Christmas newsletter on your computer if you wish.  If you don’t have iWork ‘09 download and install a free trial version of iWork ‘09 before Saturday.  It works on Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Hawaii Geek Week – Gone, but not forgotten!

gwpic

HMAUS sponsored three diverse and interesting Hawaii Geek Week offerings about new ways of doing things. The presentations took place at ING Direct Cafe on three evenings.  They focused on capitalizing on the reach and power of today’s Internet and computers . . . without programming expertise.  That means they’ll work for a lot of us!

October 20, 2009  ”TechHui” by Daniel Leuck was about a science, technology and media arts social network that has taken on a life of its own.
October 21, 2009 “Do you really need a webmaster?” by Mark Johnson answered the question, “no you don’t!”
October 22, 2009 “Mac OS vs Windows 7″ was a fun side-by-side look at the two big operating systems presented by Rolf Nordahl and Jeff Litvinoff.

Mactoberfest ‘09 had a problem…

geek day

Mactoberfest was, for the first time, combined with Leeward Community College’s new Geek Day on October 24th.  It was a great idea, but there was a major problem – it was too short! There were 17 presentations in 5 hours and each was worth participating in. The sessions should have been strung out sequentially so you could attend all of them. Seventeen hours later . . . you’d be done!

But choices had to be made and about 120 good folks did that! The HMAUS sponsored talks were standing room only!  Rolf Nordahl presented Mac 101 for newbies and switchers. Gregg Kamei presented iPhoto, and Mark McMahon handled iTunes, iPod and iPhone. Burt Lum and Ryan Ozawa closed the day in the HMAUS track with Social Media 101.

LCC’s Digital Media faculty and students presented Illustrator, Flash, Alice a 3D modeling program, Ning for making a free website, Picnik for online photo editing, home security and iApp development. They were hands-on but aimed at the beginner.  Meanhile students and staff did demonstrations on Voice Thread, making a Hawaiian tattoo, drawing an anime character and Dreamweaver for artists and displayed their work.

As always we had door prizes and the top prizes were an 8 GB iPod Nano with video, a $65 backpack and a watercolor print donated by HMAUSer Candace Fernander. Mac Mouse Club and O’Reilly Books donated books and other prizes.

A big mahalo goes to our great presenters and volunteers, to LCC’s Kathleen Cabral and Cindy Martin who coordinated and marketed the day, to Christian, his faculty and the Digital Media student who set up, cleaned up, assisted and did presentations!  Good job!
