HMAUS’ 30th Anniversary

Way back in December we celebrated HMAUS’ 30th Anniversary. It was very enjoyable and ING Direct Café graciously gave us the entire second floor for the evening. We began by taking a tally of all the Apple computers and mobile devices those present either owned or used on a daily basis.

Norm and Dot Hallett and Janet Miller log their Apples.

HMAUS 30th Anniversary coming soon!

apple2What’s older than the Mac?  The Hawaii Macintosh and Apple Users’ Society.  It began in 1979, just two years after the introduction of the first Apple II.  The Apple II sold for $1,268.  It boasted 4 kb of memory and ran at 1 MHz.  Folks loved it and the Honolulu Apple Users’ Society (HAUS), Junior Apple Users’ Society (JHAUS) and later, the Hawaii Macintosh User Group (HMUG) were formed.  The groups later merged as HMAUS.

Faithful Apple computer users have enjoyed the evolution of this amazing line as it kept its price range but increased its speed and memory exponentially.  Speed in consumer Macs has increased 3.2 millionfold, and memory has increased 4 billionfold. That evolution has kept HMAUS members busy learning and savoring life on the Apple side of the world.

On December 5, 2009 we celebrate HMAUS’ 30th Anniversary, the Macintosh’s 25th anniversary and coincidentally, the Internet’s 40th anniversary.   Join us for a buffet dinner, a some great HMAUS and Apple stories and lots of fun.

Location: ING Direct Cafe at 1958 Kalakaua Avenue. Parking is available.

$15 for HMAUS members, $25 for non-members.  Register at http://www.hmaus.org/anniversary_reservations Deadline Nov. 30th.

E komo mai, join us!

William M. Fuller 1938 – 2009

Bill Fuler

Bill Fuller

When I began working with Bill Fuller, as a member of the HMAUS Board of Directors, I always looked to him for rational advice and he never failed to deliver with extra-thorough analysis of every detail.  And why wouldn’t he be so attentive?  Bill was a serious mid-westerner, a Yale graduate, with an MBA from Stanford.  He moved to Hawaii in 1968 with his wife Susan and went to work for Crown Corporation. Eventually, he became the company president.  Later, Bill moved on to Tongg Publishing, and he became president there too. Bill was more than qualified to serve HMAUS for the many years that he did.

MacSpringfest: How to have a great time and what to expect

May 23rd, 2009, HMAUS is putting on their annual MacSpringfest. This year will be at JAIMS in Hawaii Kai (Google maps). There is plenty of parking and lots of activities planned, so you can stay for the day or as long as you can. The event is FREE — though to help support the HMAUS organization, please renew your membership, or sign up as a member. (More membership details about HMAUS (Hawaii Mac & Apple User Society, Inc.) can be found HERE.)

MacSpringFestThe full list of speakers is HERE — highlights include; Peter Kay, Andy Bumatai, and Bert Lum on topics like iLife ‘09, Mac 101, Adobe Lightroom, and Social Networks and Livefeeds. You may want to arrive a little early for some of the speakers to get a good seat. The JAIMS buildings will be filled with Mac enthusiasts, experts, and “switchers” (PC users just starting to use Macs). So, no matter YOUR level of expertise, you’ll find someone there to learn and chat with.

You should bring some money with you, especially if you like bargains. The Professional Photographers of Hawaii and HMAUS will have a swapmeet — expect to find goodies for cameras and computers. And, if you plan to stay the entire day, order a little bit for the tasty bento meals now: link is HERE.

If you like to blog, bring your camera and computer to capture the events. HMAUS sponsored HawaiiGeekWeek last year and brought out lots of social networking fans; posting to Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and videoblogs. We’re hoping to see lots of great posts about “MacSpringFest” this year!

As with HMAUS’s Mactoberfest, there will be some fun prizes and giveaways, and this time someone will win an iPod Touch!

If you’d like to volunteer to make this years MacSpringfest the best ever, just let us know, we could sure use extra help!

That’s pretty much it, be sure to review the days events HERE so you don’t miss the topics you are most interested in. Tell a friend and see you there!

Hi, I'm a Mac! … Me too!

Hi, I'm a Mac... and I'm a Mac.

(click the image to see why)

Are you new to Macintosh?

You knew Windows and you knew it well. But you’ve since added a Macintosh to your life and feeling a little unsure about this new relationship. The Mac 101 workshop at the Mac Springfest will help you achieve better harmony in your digital home.

Mac 101 is a class for newbies, switchers and for people who just haven’t had time to really get to know their Mac. We will look around the desktop, explore at the Dock, get an understanding of the System Preferences, learn some shortcuts and, most importantly, try to answer your questions. This is a good class for people who have switched to Macintosh or are planning to switch to Macintosh and want to understand their machine a little better. This session is very low key and relaxed.

More information about Mac Springfest here.

It’s tomorrow!

Bring your bad photos

Bring your poorly exposed photographs to the Image Makers Workshop on Thursday, May 14, and we’ll talk about techniques you can use to make them better. Put your bad photos on a CD or USB thumb drive in JPEG format and we’ll use these examples for learning.

The focus will be on good exposure.

You may also send your images via email. Use this form.

Also at the Image Makers Workshop Terrence Young will demonstrate Final Cut Express. He will show a few of his short videos and explain how he used the software to edit his “footage.”

At 6:30 PM, we’ll have a special tour of Fujifilm Hawaii facilities to learn more about their image processing services. Don’t be late for this!

More information and registration here.

Please register because we will only print enough handouts for the number of people who will be attending.
