Are you a victim of your own success as a photographer? Are your grandchildren, children, girlfriend/boyfriend too darned cute not to photograph every day? Did you go on a trip and take 1000+ great photos? Perhaps you’ve taken movies with your iPhone or still or digital camera and they’re still in your device. If you’re now wondering what you can do all those images and movies come to our first MacLearn evening presentation on Thursday, March 4th from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at ING Direct Cafe.

This is a shotgun presentation in which Gregg Kamei and Joan Matsukawa will demonstrate a number of possibilities for later exploration. See how you can

organize your photos in iPhoto events and albums, geotag and keyword them for easy retrieval, and use a free web photo service such as Google’s Picasa or HP’s Tabblo and Smilebox e-cards.

edit them in iPhoto and in Picnik, a free web photo editing service, then

share them in slide shows, galleries, albums and DVDs.

Then see how you can take movies with your iPhone and…

send them to yourself or transfer them from your phone or digital camera by cable to your computer and iMovie

organize clips in a project and

edit the clips with titles, effects and music, then finally

share the movies in a MobileMe gallery, your iTunes library or to YouTube!

This is a LOT in one night but we intend to have fun with it. Join us! Handouts are at drop.io/hmaus_maclearn for download (no password needed).

Free and everyone welcome.

ING Direct Cafe is at 1958 Kalakaua Avenue. Ali’i Conference Room 2nd floor

Parking is in the rear or one block mauka on Niu Street. Come early and grab a bite to eat and drink and relax upstairs before we start.

November 21st was a sampler day for MacLearn. Norman and Dorothy Hallett, Robbie Gee, Joan Larcom, Marcy Katz, Richard Sato, Lorie Goodman and Terrence Young had fun with all kinds of great apps for making things with images.

Terrence first shot a clip of each person in front of ING Direct’s green wall using the video feature of his regular Canon camera. The clips were brought into iMovie using the green screen effect and voila! folks were transported to Branson, the grandchildren’s house, Chicago or Europe.

Next was Photo Booth. Lorie took a video ride on a moving roller coaster and others tried the 4-up, sepia tone and miscellaneous effects. The computer’s built-in camera captured a still or a video clip which could be sent to iPhoto with one click.

iPhoto cards and calendars came next. One or more photos were selected in iPhoto. Then the Keepsake Card, Album or Calendar button was clicked. That opened a list of templates to choose from. The photos were then dragged into the image placeholders. Background colors, text fonts and layouts were changed in an instant. Some templates had text placeholders for a short letter.

However, printing was an issue since Apple intends you to buy prints through them. Right-clicking on the project anywhere in the white space between the text and image placeholder boxes allowed the project to be saved as a PDF. Cards print beautifully on greeting card blanks you can buy from Ben Franklin and other craft stores. Commercial printing services will probably give you the best price and quality if you need more than a few items. Marcy shared a 5 x 7 photobook she made of her grandchildren made by one of these services. The session handout has links to several such services – many have specials for the holidays.

But wait, there was more. Although the Internet connection stalled on us and we were unable to do Picnik for online photo editing, it was discussed. Picnik is free and goes beyond iPhoto’s editing abilities. It includes many text effects, clip art, photo frames and allows you to save in multiple formats and sizes. It’s very easy to use and Picnik video tutorials are available. Another free online site, Smilebox, is a Mac friendly e-card service for creating drag and drop cards that can include video clips as well as still images. Even kids can do it.

iWork Pages was next and folks dragged and dropped text and images into placeholders in one of the many templates. Free clip art easily embellishes the holiday newsletter. The Packaging Pictures handout is available at driop.io/hmaus_maclearn and includes links to two free holiday clip art sites. You can use the instant alpha tool in Pages for removing the white background on these images.

Mahalo to Norman for his egg nog creation – Terrence said we could use his picture, oh wait, he said don’t tell anyone who it is! Don’t tell him I told you. There were so many choices for creating fun, beautiful, lasting gifts. If you missed it, don’t worry. The apps are easy to use, the Apple video tutorials are excellent and the session handout can be downloaded and printed. Give it a try!

P.S. Just came across a MacWorld “Holiday newsletters with iWeb 09″ post. Here’s one more idea! http://www.macworld.com/article/143860/2009/11/newsiweb.html?lsrc=nl_mwweek_h_cbstories

Ross Rasmussen introduced two robust iApps, iMovie and iDVD ’09 to save your memories in an entertaining and professional looking way. In a two hour MacLearn session on August 22nd he took the process from start to finish. He shot some video clips of traffic on Kalakaua Avenue and of Richard Sato dancing, well, gesturing, in front of the green wall upstairs at the ING Direct Café. He imported them as iMovie Events, and from those Events, selected and dragged clips into an iMovie project. Built-in templates, titles and effects made it easy to stitch the clips into a movie. He turned Richard upside and had traffic driving through him on Kalakaua. Howz that?!

He then demonstrated how easy it is to create a DVD with your movies or photo slideshows made with zoom and pan Ken Burns effects. You start with one of about 100 free templates. Then you drag in movies and photos from your media browser. They become links to your media. You format these links as buttons, framed pictures or video clips to create a menu, just like the DVDs you buy at the video store. Add music and just click the Burn button and you have a DVD.

Missed it or want handouts? Go to http://drop.io/hmaus_maclearn to download the iMovie and iDVD handouts. Check out the Apple video tutorials at http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#imovie The handouts are designed to work with the these tutorials.

Mahalo to Ross who not only gave us a great presentation last Saturday, but also provided a very enjoyable hands-on iPhoto workshop two weeks ago for 11 lucky HMAUSers. Mahalo also to Jeff Kang who again provided yet another tech rescue for us, and took these pictures. Finally, thank you to ING Direct for providing us with a super venue.

What’s next? Join us at the September 26th MacLearn from 10-12 at ING Direct Café. Colin Murphy, Apple Solutions Consultant based at Best Buy Pearl City presents iWork ’09, a great wordprocessing, spreadsheet and presentation suite. Tip: right now there are the BEST prices I’ve ever seen for iWork - Amazon.com has it for $46.99 with free shipping, the University of Hawaii Bookstores have it for $49 for students/staff, and it’s $79 at Best Buy with shopping points! (Note: iWork requires 10.4 or higher). Click here for driving/parking directions to ING Direct Cafe. Hope to see you.

Other upcoming MacLearn activities: iMovie, iDVD hands-on session by Joe Zaret on Sept. 5th and a iPhoto hands-on session by Gregg Kamei on Sept. 12th. Sorry, both are filled, but watch your HMAUS email member announcements for last minute openings and the next workshop.

Ross just completed a great iPhoto handson workshop and now he focuses on two amazing products you get for free with your new Mac. Take those cellular phone and digital camera movies, still pictures and actually do something with them. You know what I mean 8-).

iMovie lets you import movies, clip them, drop them into a project window, then drag to reorder them, add text, special effects and transitions. Finish them off with music and even rolling credits. Save them out as a Quicktime movie or export to YouTube or iTunes. Then comes iDVD. Take 2, 3 or more movies and put them together in a self-playing DVD with cool templates you drag and drop your stuff into. Way cool!

ING Direct Cafe 1958 Kalakaua Avenue. Please click to see driving/parking directions. Parking available in the employee lot on Niu St. (preferred). If you do park behind the cafe please leave some spaces behind the Cafe for their regular customers. We want to continue to be welcome guests. This is the best venue we’ve had yet 8-) Mahalo.

Join us!
