Saturday was a slow conference day. The rooms were not as crowded as before but the sessions were still excellent.

“Going Paperless,” led by Katie Floyd, was about reducing paper document archives through scanning and digitizing. Do you realize the space you could liberate if you didn’t have to store all those receipts, statements, tax returns, and utility bills? With a good scanner, a little effort, plus a good document management plan, you could really clear a lot of the clutter out of your office or closet.

“FaceTime and Video Chat” was led by Tidbits editor Glenn Fleishman. Video chat and conferencing have come a long way in the last couple of years, and while the technology is still evolving, its usefulness is becoming apparent to more and more people, especially to families who can use FaceTime so easily — with simply a phone call.

Both Katie and Glenn frequently use video chat to communicate with their audiences and they were very enthusiastic about the prospect of sharing their expertise with HMAUS, via video chat, just like Joe Kissell did at Mactoberfest.

We met some really smart, interesting, inventive people this week, and we’re making connections!

Thanks to HMAUS for making it possible for me and Ron Albu to have this stimulating experience.

Coming October 23rd – HMAUS and Leeward Community College partner again to present Geek Day 2010.  Last year was a standing-room only event!  The day will be loaded with FREE demos and hands-on workshops introducing us to how we can enhance the enjoyment of our music, photos, and video;  how to be more productive at home or work; how to extend our creativity and artistic talents;  all with the use of our personal computers and the latest software.  www.leeward.hawaii.edu/Geekday.

Admission is FREE and open to the public, with food, coffee, and DOOR PRIZES.  Cafe opens at 8:00 am.  Arrive early, grab a snack, and be ready to tune in for the first keynote presentation at 8:30 am, “Keep it Purring–Mac Maintenance” plus “Windows on a Mac”, with Joe Kissell, tidBITS.com Senior Editor; author of over 24 Take Control e-books; and Macworld Magazine senior contributor. He will present live  from Paris, France, via iChat, the video-conferencing program built into every Mac. The first door prize drawing happens at the end of this opening session and includes a $50 Hawaii Photo Rental gift certificate!

Morning and afternoon presentations include iMovie, iWork and Mac 101, Adobe Illustrator, drawing with a Wacom pad, 3D, mind mapping, blogging, online banking, social media and more, over 20 to choose from.   The hands-on workshops in the computer labs are user friendly with no experience necessary. Bring your camera for photography sessions.  At noon,  Kepano Kekuewa, Apple Representative for Higher Education, delivers the lunchtime keynote presentation  “Apple at Home and at Work”.

Throughout the day you can get answers to your Mac and PC problems at the “Really Smart Bar” and see minidemos and and ask questions at the Tech Talk Story round tables.
