Zen and the Art of Photography with Doug Beasley

A workshop by the Pacific New Media

Feb 28-Mar 1 * Sat/Sun * 9:00am-4:00pm * 2 mtgs * UHM Krauss 012 (Yukiyoshi Room) * $200

This workshop is about expanding the boundaries of one’s vision and rethinking expectations of what it means to ‘see’. It is a challenging invitation to heighten visual awareness, define personally suitable subject matter, and clarify one’s approach through photographic and visual exercises concerned with both internal and external exploration.

Human tools are addressed, supporting the notion that a photograph is not ‘taken’ but made. The maker needs to be present, open, and responsive to the unfolding moment, where connection to the subject is more important than any piece of photographic gear.

Through off-site camerawork, critique, and review of images, and open dialogue, the instructor guides participants to a deeper awareness of their own inherent vision, and in discovering the unique in the commonplace. An extremely effective teacher, he assists in the process of integrating digital tools with a highly dynamic creative point of view.

Participants must have a working knowledge of their camera, though the creative process of image making is emphasized. Open to all levels of experience. Please bring a digital camera and capture card to the class.

Doug Beasley received a BFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he also studied Eastern religions and Native American culture. He photographs throughout the country for various advertising, educational, public service, and nonprofit clients. He has taught extensively and is currently an adjunct professor of art at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Beasley is the founder and director of Vision Quest Photographic Arts Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
