He will present live  from Paris, France, via iChat, the video-conferencing program built into every Mac. The first door prize drawing happens at the end of this opening session and includes a $50 Hawaii Photo Rental gift certificate!

Morning and afternoon presentations include iMovie, iWork and Mac 101, Adobe Illustrator, drawing with a Wacom pad, 3D, mind mapping, blogging, online banking, social media and more, over 20 to choose from.   The hands-on workshops in the computer labs are user friendly with no experience necessary. Bring your camera for photography sessions.  At noon,  Kepano Kekuewa, Apple Representative for Higher Education, delivers the lunchtime keynote presentation  “Apple at Home and at Work”.

Throughout the day you can get answers to your Mac and PC problems at the “Really Smart Bar” and see minidemos and and ask questions at the Tech Talk Story round tables. Weʻll demonstrate de.li.cious for saving and sharing bookmarks on any computer, Jing for making and uploading screen shots or video tutorials,  Wix.com for creating a Flash website and Worlde for making..Wordles like this one.  Web 2.0 apps are made for folks who want to do cool things but donʻt want to have to do an programming.  Theyʻre pretty plug and play.  If you have a favorite 2.0 site to share, bring the URL.  Weʻll have a laptop and projector.  Free.  ING Direct Cafe, 2nd floor conference room.

Boot Camp #1  Mac 101. 7/24 (new date) This is our first full day hands-on boot camp to get you started with your Mac. Hear it, do it, master it! This is your base set of skills. We’ll cover Leopard/Snow Leopard tips; how to find, view and organize files efficiently, short cuts and an introduction to the suite of iapps that come with your Mac.  Come and immerse yourself for a day and walk away with real skill. SpringFest 2010 on May lst brought over 120 people through the doors at Kapiolani Community College for a full day of workshops, door prizes and a swapmeet!  Congratulations to iPad grand-prize winner and new HMAUS member Darrel Baluscang!

Mae Kishimoto, another HMAUS member, won the MacSpeech Dictate software with a Bluetooth headset courtesy of Andy Taylor and Nuance Software.  Other lucky winners walked away with $20 Best Buy gift-cards, camera bags and other prizes.

The iPad was definitely the big star of the day;  but there were a couple of little ones too! (see photo)

Presentations began with  Jerome Koehler, Apple Solutions consultant from Best Buy Aiea, who highlighted the iPad and the new MacBooks.

Four Professional Photographers of Hawaii members shared how they capture their unique images: Dwight Okumoto, of Studio 3 presented panoramas; Claude Ayakawa of Claude’s Photos, portraiture; Jennifer Chung, dance, and Terry Takaki of TMC & Associates, lenses for close up and landscape.  Mick Isde of Lighthaus Camera gave a preview of SLRs with HDR video. HI Communications demoed the super fast Clear 4G system and provided everyone with Wi-Fi all day.

There was a short HMAUS annual meeting to confirm the election of six Board directors – Rick “Wolfman” Gass, Ronald Albu, Kimo Sutton, plus new Board members Burt Lum, Claudia Nygard and Christian Ganne.

And there was more!  Chris Gagiulo of KCC’s New Media Arts program explained the development of  websites, from concept through wireframing using Adobe Creative Suite.  Brian Kerber of AppleMagic.net offered Mac 101; Ross Rasmussen, iApps that come free with everyone’s Mac; Greg Kamei took folks deeper into iTunes;  Ron Albu & Lois Cain showed how to have fun with Skype and iChat. There was something for everyone.

People agreed the sessions could have been longer, but that was OK because one of the purposes of Springfest is to get folks interested in learning more by attending other events held throughout the year. A schedule is always available at the HMAUS Signal website http://www.hmaus.org. Lecture presentations are free, hands-on workshops are very inexpensive.  HMAUS members get priority seating and discounts.

MacLearn monthly events happen on the fourth Saturday at ING Direct Cafe from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.   HMAUS classes are on the Calendar so look for upcoming events.

Image Makers 12:30 p.m.- 2:30 p.m.  Making photographs that say “buy me!” on Ebay and Craigslist with photographer Terry Takaki.  Outstanding pictures will really help you get the best price for your items. They’ll sell faster because your buyers will see what they need to see.

Our guest expert, Terry Takaki, will conduct a hands-on workshop on how to make images of products using a table-top lightbox, lighting and backgrounds. You will learn how to use light to bring out the best features of your product. You will also receive instructions on how to make your very own lightbox from inexpensive materials.  Bring a small doll if you want to pickup tips on lighting and portraiture.  Location:  Second floor Ali’i Room.

The Image Makers Workshop’s field trip held this past Sunday at the Queen Liliuokalani Botanical Gardens gave participants a hands-on opportunity to learn how to create memorable outdoor portraits.  The Nishikis, Scott, Cheryl and their daughter Sierra, participated as models for the event.

Instructor Terry Takaki reviewed some of the techniques and esthetics for outdoor portraits which the participants could immediately apply. Tips included adjusting aperture settings to produce out of focus backgrounds, the effect of focal length on subjects, proper exposure and posing.

Participants were even given the opportunity to try their hands at shooting with a macro lens.

HMAUS members who participated in the workshop were Terrence Young, Joan Matsukawa, Gregg Kamei, Elizabeth Hammond, Lisa Oi and Junie Hayashi.

After the morning workshop participants stopped at Zippy’s on Vineyard Boulevard for lunch, sharing ideas and viewing the event images.

Joan Matsukawa brought the Nishikis to serve as the models for the workshop. They will be given the best images of the lot. Cheryl is Joan’s niece.
